Art, A Definition?

“the boy fancies himself a poet!” So what is art? One can argue that certain video games are not ‘art’ because they are merely games where you have goals much like Ebert’s Chess example. However this seems like a very loose definition of art to me. Using this definition in fact supports that video games can be art, after all not every painting is a work of art is it? I don’t mean this in terms of liking Monet over Picasso I mean this in terms of purpose, which is what I find defines art. People use the medium of … Continue reading Art, A Definition?

From the solid to the old

“Those were the best days of my life” Hello all. I’ll start off with something related to the previous post. Got some new Mac Pros (2.3 GHz Octo-Core, 6GB RAM) into work yesterday and started setting them up today. Now when I ordered these machines I made sure the video card would support two simultaneous 23” Cinema Displays…twice. Trusting Apple was my first mistake. I un-box them today to start setting them up and the video card only has one DVI port and a Mini-DVI port…what the fuck? So I call Apple which was my second mistake. The typical Apple … Continue reading From the solid to the old

To Boldly Go Between Instances

“Thats the way we do things lad, we’re making shit up as we wish” Hello again readers. First off in regards to my last post I’ve decided I will be getting a PS3 + Heavy Rain at the end of next week. As of that time I’ll own all three major consoles plus a kick-ass PC, Take THAT statistics! Now onto more recent yet kinda old news. About 3 weeks ago I picked up a copy (reluctantly) of Star Trek: Online and I’ve gotta say I was very impressed at the time. Considering I don’t much care for MMOs or … Continue reading To Boldly Go Between Instances

To PS3 or not to PS3

“I grew so close to all the thoughts I had to leave forever” Wednesday is looking like a good day to post. I’ll try and keep it regular, fingers crossed ay? Alright so on my mind lately has been one thing ‘Should I get a PS3’ I’m not a big fan, to start with. Not because I think the Xbox is better or any other random fanboy crap but simply because I’ve never seen a real ‘need’ to own a PS3. Until Now…. Heavy Rain, a game which is almost directly targeted at me is only on the PS3 and … Continue reading To PS3 or not to PS3

The Best Video Games of 2000 – 2010: Part Eight: Special Awards

“We’re leaving together, but still it’s farewell” Well here we are at the (late I know) end of this series. I’ve enjoyed it, but I’m looking forward to posting about random crap from now on. I’m looking at keeping either a regular Monday or Wednesday schedule from now on. We’ll just see how that goes lol. So for this final part I’ll be showcasing some games that I feel deserved mention but didn’t fit into a genre award. This awards are more about games I really enjoyed or that left a mark on me. So lets kick this baby into … Continue reading The Best Video Games of 2000 – 2010: Part Eight: Special Awards

The Best Video Games of 2000 – 2010: Part Six: Best Real Time Strategy

“To the leader, to the prior, the victim, the Messiah” Well here we are at part six of this series. I’ll start this one off by saying I’m not much of an RTS fan. It’s not really a genre I play very regularly. I find that too many of the games in this genre place a focus on massing as many resources as possible in the shortest amount of time. I’ve never really understood where the ‘Strategy’ part comes from. Using a Zerg or Mamoth Tank rush is not what I would consider strategic in anyway. Doesn’t matter though, people … Continue reading The Best Video Games of 2000 – 2010: Part Six: Best Real Time Strategy

The Best Video Games of 2000 – 2010: Part Five: Best Horror Game

“Please don’t loose hope…” Welcome back for yet another late post. I apologise but, like Mass Effect 2, Doctor Who has priority. Hopefully I’ll get Wednesday’s post done on time. Firstly I’ll talk a bit about about this issue. Read the article and the comments (on that site and on every gaming related website around the globe) and make up your own mind. Here’s my opinion: DRM is mostly a bad call. Why do I say this? because unlike most I buy games. I have often borrowed a game or taken a copy at a LAN party but 98% of … Continue reading The Best Video Games of 2000 – 2010: Part Five: Best Horror Game

The Best Video Games of 2000 – 2010: Part Four: Music/Rhythm Game

“Tonight! I’m a Rock n’ Roll Star!” Welcome back. Another late one I know shut up. First up I should mention the ‘platform’ that I list after a game is the platform I played it on not the only one available. Today I bring you one of the newer genres in video games. Sure it was around (Japan mostly) but it didn’t really become established until the last decade. These games are a fresh new way to enjoy music and have become a very popular ‘party game’ probably the only party style games which aren’t exclusive to Nintendo’s Wii. Everyone … Continue reading The Best Video Games of 2000 – 2010: Part Four: Music/Rhythm Game

The Best Video Games of 2000 – 2010: Part Two: Role Playing Game

“We stand before the dawn over a new world..” So here I am to continue my list of the best games of the last decade. Some may wonder why I’m doing this. Well mostly because I can but it’s also because this was the first decade I really ‘lived’ through. Sure I was alive and experienced many games during the ‘90s but I wasn’t really aware of how games worked or what they had the potential to do until the ‘00s. I also finally had friends in High School (yes I was an outcast in Primary School, SHOCK!) who also … Continue reading The Best Video Games of 2000 – 2010: Part Two: Role Playing Game

!WARNING! the following is rated ‘R’ for Rant

“Baby, did you forget to take your meds?” Many Australian gamers may have already read this article. Most people are aware by now that Australia lacks an R 18+ rating for video games (the same as NC 17 in America). The majority of the reason is the man featured in the article, an old shell of a man named Michael Atkinson who is still living in the distant past. You can read the article for yourself but I’ll just comment on the issue in general here. The claim is that introducing an R18+ rating for video games will allow games … Continue reading !WARNING! the following is rated ‘R’ for Rant
